Diamond guide

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are both diamonds. Their origin is different, and that origin should be clearly disclosed for the piece you choose.

How they form

Natural diamonds form within the Earth. Laboratory-grown diamonds are produced using controlled technological processes. They have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties, while specialist testing can identify differences related to growth.

Origin and grading reports

Look for an explicit origin statement and information about any grading report. Laboratory-grown diamonds are different from diamond simulants such as cubic zirconia. A product photograph cannot establish origin.

Comparing the complete piece

Consider the setting, shape, dimensions and documented diamond characteristics alongside the asking price. Avoid treating an origin label as a complete description of quality, sourcing or environmental impact.

Questions to ask

Bring your priorities to the decision. If a product listing leaves something unclear, ask for that information before you buy.
